A significant change will come into effect on 1 March 2025: the previous Elastomer Guideline will be replaced by the Assessment Basis for Plastics and other Organic Materials in Contact with Drinking Water (KTW-BWGL). This adjustment brings with it new requirements for elastomers and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) used in drinking water applications.
What are the implications of the change?
From the effective date, all elastomer and TPE products that come into contact with drinking water must meet the strict requirements of the KTW-BWGL. The previous test certificates according to the old elastomer guideline are no longer valid. End customers of elastomer components such as O-rings can continue to use ‘old’ test reports according to the Elastomer Guideline until 1 March 2025 as part of a certification process, but these may not be more than 10 years old. After that, only test reports according to KTW-BWGL for elastomers and TPE will be valid.
Specifically, this means for manufacturers and users:
- Only materials that comply with the new KTW-BWGL positive lists are permitted.
- Old test certificates are no longer valid – new certifications are required.
- Products must undergo stricter quality controls.
