Silicone profiles - for applications in industry and the food sector

We supply silicone profiles for a wide range of applications where literally flexible material properties are required - for example, high heat or cold resistance (-55 to +200°C as standard), ozone and weather resistance, food-safe properties or good electrical insulation properties.

KREMER offers custom-made, continuously extruded silicone profiles, sections, rings and frames whose cross-section geometries can be described as hollow chamber profiles, tubular profiles, lip profiles and, with regard to the silicone material, as solid profiles and silicone foam profiles.

We supply silicone profile gaskets to customers from various industries with a wide range of applications: from building services, ventilation and air conditioning technology to the food and automotive industries. Depending on the application, we are able to supply profiles made of silicone foam or 2-component profile seals made of silicone solid rubber (HTV) and silicone foam. We can also offer you solutions if higher demands are placed on the material - for example, if you need special types for use at temperatures up to +300°C.

In order to be able to produce sections of extruded silicone profiles using a cutting machine, the surface of the profiles must be slightly talcum-coated. In other words: without a talcum-coated surface, it is almost impossible to process a silicone profile with a cutting machine. Only talcum coating ensures that the required length tolerances can be maintained when cutting silicone profiles to length and, in particular, when cutting silicone foam profiles to length. What at first glance appears to be absolutely manageable with solid rubber profiles made of EPDM is, however, not quite so easy at second glance with profiles made of silicone solid rubber with a lower Shore A hardness and can only be realized with special cutting machines. The difficulty of cutting to length is even greater for profiles made of silicone foam with an even lower density than sponge rubber profiles made of EPDM.

Chemical resistance of materials

With the help of film vulcanization, KREMER can produce rings and frames from extruded silicone profiles which, in contrast to gluing the joint, hardly show any offset at the connection point. This is a particularly economically driven solution when the application would require the precision of a molded part, but the costs of a significantly more expensive injection molding tool cannot be calculated by the customer.

The use of talcum as a lubricant must be avoided during the manufacture of the silicone profiles for ring and frame production, especially for later use in contact with food. In this case, the required piece lengths must be carefully laid out and cut manually on a cutting table, avoiding elongation due to tensile forces. Due to the geometry and material, the untreated surface of silicone profiles sometimes adheres very strongly to clean and smooth surfaces, which makes precise cutting to length and cutting more difficult and therefore requires greater length tolerances in accordance with DIN 3661 L 3.

        Silikonprofil Filmvulkanisation

During preparation, the already vulcanized yard goods are cut to the desired length and vulcanized together inseparably in a vulcanization tool by inserting a thin silicone strip or applying a paste-like silicone of the same silicone material to the fresh cut edges. If precise positioning of the joint is important in the installation situation, the film vulcanization point can be made visible by using a silicone that differs in colour from the profile.

Whether it is feasible to equip silicone profiles and silicone foam profiles with self-adhesive film must be checked individually. Due to the high surface tension of silicone as a material, it will generally not be possible to create a good and strong bond between the adhesive film and the silicone. In particular, if the profile has to be laid in bundles for the purpose of resource-saving transportation or wound onto a spool for machine installation, the use of an adhesive film as an installation aid is not recommended. All too often, the cover film ripples and detaches from the adhesive film. This occurs in particular with soft silicone solid rubber profiles and silicone foam profiles due to the possible elongation and length compression and does not constitute a defect.

The installation of soft silicone profiles and even more unstable silicone foam profiles with self-adhesive equipment in narrow groove geometries is also problematic, as the deformation of the profile geometry during the joining process can lead to premature contact between the adhesive film and the groove wall and the incorrect positioning can only be corrected by loosening and adjusting the profile again - if at all. In this respect, the mountability and correct position of the profile should be solved by design until the final installation.
