Compensation module with bellows changes robotics

A sensor-based compensation module ensures that modern robots can sense their surroundings. This will make it possible to automate and optimise processes in the future, as an articulated arm or linear robot can use the compensation module to sense object positions and forward the information to the controller. This increases the productivity and quality of the tasks carried out by robots. Adjusting the robot arm during the ongoing process using the real-time information obtained is a major advance in robotics.

An important component of the compensation module that we manufacture for our customer is a filigree bellows made of TPE, which is characterised by a low wall thickness combined with very soft Shore hardness. This ensures that the bellows have as little influence as possible on the data recorded by the sensor unit. TPEs are thermoplastic elastomers - materials that are processed under the influence of heat and retain their rubber-elastic properties after cooling.

Recyclable TPE with high resistance to chemicals is used for the bellows of the equalisation unit. Bellows are used in a wide variety of areas: for example, they are used as flexible seals between axles and gearboxes (axle boots), to protect sensitive electronic components in construction machinery or are installed in joysticks.
