Gap extrusion

Gap extrusion is the process in which an elastomer part , e.g. an O-ring, is pressed into the sealing gap under pressure . If the pressure is high and pulsating, gap extrusion can lead to the destruction of the sealing element. To prevent this, a suitably hard material or a support ring should be used.
