Brittleness

The tendency of a material to break or crumble when deformed .

Very hard materials break close to their elastic limit with little or no deformation; this is known as brittle fracture.
Plastics, on the other hand, deform a lot before they finally break due to the deformation. This is known as deformation fracture.

The brittleness of most materials increases as temperatures decrease.
